Kangaroo
An emblem of Australia, misunderstood and mislabelled. Kangaroos are native, legally protected on paper, and subject to the largest commercial slaughter of land-based wildlife on Earth. This campaign exists to tell the truth behind the label of ‘pest’.
The Crisis
For decades, kangaroos have been framed as a pest competing with livestock for pasture. The reality is more complicated — and far more brutal — than that label suggests. Millions are killed every year under a system built on contested science and industry-written rules.
Australia’s commercial kangaroo industry kills an estimated 1.6 to 1.8 million kangaroos a year, under government quotas that permit 4.5 to 6 million. Close to 90 million have been killed for meat and skins over the past 30 years — making it the largest commercial killing of land-based wildlife anywhere on Earth.
Kangaroos are legally protected fauna, but exemptions for farmers, developers, and land managers make that protection largely nominal. The modern kangaroo industry began as pest control after non-native sheep and cattle overran the land — damage often blamed on kangaroos instead.
Population estimates come from helicopter surveys of small sample areas, extrapolated across vast regions and adjusted with a ‘correction factor’ that critics say has repeatedly been revised to mask real declines. In some regions, no scientifically valid population count has existed for over a decade — yet shooting quotas have continued regardless.
Industry-written codes of practice can be used as a legal defence against cruelty charges, even though identical treatment of a dog would be prosecuted. Investigations have documented carcasses left ungutted for hours in extreme heat and transported for days before reaching a chiller — raising both welfare and food-safety concerns.
Where things stand: Australia already holds the world’s worst mammal extinction record — roughly 35% of all mammal extinctions in the last 400 years have happened here. Former kangaroo shooters describe the work itself as psychologically traumatic. And the political tide is shifting: New South Wales elected the country’s first Animal Justice Party MP, who has pushed to finally review a kangaroo management plan that had gone unquestioned for 25 years.
